But the U.S. health care system isn’t ready. That became painfully clear during the COVID-19 pandemic, when seniors with disabilities struggled to access care, and far too many paid the ultimate price.

Now, federal agencies are finally acknowledging that older adults with disabilities are a distinct population with unique needs. But recognition alone isn’t enough.

Bias in medicine is real, 82% of doctors surveyed believe people with significant disabilities have a lower quality of life,

and nearly half admit they’re reluctant to treat them. That’s not just unacceptable, it’s dangerous.
